This is about my heroics as a water polo player...naah I'd be honest I'm not bragging....u'll know modesty is my second name :)
In this particular post I'd write about a legendary water polo match that I played for my club against P.M Hindu Bath (charni road)...
Well why legendary you may ask?? Its bcoz, my moment of glory came when my goal in the last minute of the match WON the match for my team!!
It was an U-17 match I played for Nirlon swimming pool (mumbai) against much fancied rivals P.M Hindu Bath Mumbai in the year 1991. This match was supposed to be a cake-walk for our opponents because they were better swimmers with a team-coach to train them et al....our victory against them is all the more laudable in this light!!
After the 3rd quarter they were leading 6-5 on us and in the last 5 minutes, we were tied at 6 all. At the half line we got a foul in our favour and I broke free, somehow mustering all the stamina, sprinting towards the goal and got a decent pass...I swam with the ball till the 4 mtr mark and stood to take a shot.. The goalie got overconfident and it gave me all the more reason to crush his cockiness. He had the goal-post covered and wanted me to shoot as hard as I could, but I had other ideas......I kept my cool and put a lob (the best that I have ever put)....the ball curved down beautifully high over the goalie's reach and into the net....the whole of the stadia burst into applause!!! I raised my fist several times in adrenalin pumping manner and shouted loud "yayyyyyy come on"....the entire team was ecstatic and patted me...our senior team members too we present and applauded my goal... THIS WAS MY MOMENT OF GLORY!!
After the goal there were approximately 40 seconds left in the match and we managed to hold on to our lead and win the match!!
In the shower/change room senior players from other teams like Indian Navy, Deccan Gymkhana (pune), MGMO (dadar) et al passing by me congratulated me saying "nice lob"....It felt awesome to be applauded by such gr8 players...
Till this day that memory has remained etched in my mind. Many years from now, I'd still remember it and one day tell my kid about it!! lil senti ha!!
